December 2020

From The Hills of Cherokee

Greetings to you all from the Hills of Cherokee,

We wanted to send a quick note out to you about life in Cherokee as we enter the holiday season this year.

Family Life

The fall was an eventful time in our lives as our son Johnathan and his fiancée Autumn were joined in marriage. On October 24th, Johnathan and Autumn became the new Mr. and Mrs. Johnathan Hill! God blessed us with a beautiful fall day in the mountains of Cullowhee, NC as we gathered with family and friends to celebrate this event. Scott was honored to be able to have a part in conducting the service alongside Autumn’s grandfather, who is a Baptist pastor. We are excited to have Autumn as the newest member of our family. We look forward to what God has in store for them in the future. Johnathan will begin a new job at Andy Shaw Ford in Sylva, NC in December and Autumn will continue to work as a CNA at a nursing home in Sylva.

Katie continues living in Boone as she looks forward to completing her studies for this semester. She is working in Boone and has an apartment with her roommate, so we only see her occasionally when her schedule permits her to come home for a few days. Thankfully, she was able to be with us for a few days over Thanksgiving.

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day with all four children at home for lunch. Scott Jr., Bekah and Briggs traveled up from Greenville, SC on Wednesday. He spent his time Wednesday evening doing some counter remodeling to install a new stove in our kitchen. The old one was not working properly and was at the age that replacement parts can not be found. The new stove was about ½” too wide to fit in the place of the old stove, so he went to work making the necessary modifications and installed the new one for us. This made for an incredibly happy momma and wife as she was able to cook most of our Thanksgiving meal on her new stove. He also fried the turkey for us on Thanksgiving Day.

Bethany arrived home on Thanksgiving morning and was able to spend the day with the rest of the family.

Ruth and Scott are doing well and are finding ways to keep in touch with those who were attending worship prior to COVID. We are adjusting well to the new stage of life we are in with no children at home. It is a blessing to have this time to focus on our relationship together. Pray for continued protection over our family from the virus. Scott Jr., Bekah, and Bethany have all recovered from the virus after testing positive and experiencing symptoms. We are thankful that no one required hospitalization and are doing well. Pray for Ruth and Scott as they try to find ways to encourage those who have attended worship in the past as well as those who continue to attend worship through the COVID situation. Pray for Johnathan and Autumn as they begin this new chapter in their lives and for Katie as she continues with her studies at Appalachian State.

Church Life

Grace Community Church of Cherokee continues to meet in-person each Sunday morning for worship. COVID presents a new set of challenges for us as we work to see Grace Community Church of Cherokee established here. We are thankful for those who continue to attend each week. While we are fewer in number now than we were before COVID, God is still God and we treasure the times we are able to worship Him together. Please pray for Grace Community Church of Cherokee and those who have been attending worship services with us. Pray for protection for each of us from COVID. Pray for those who have yet to return to worship. Pray that God would remove fear and in His timing that He would bring them back into the fellowship of the body. Pray that God would firmly establish Grace Community Church of Cherokee and raise up leaders for the future of the church.

We continue to seek God’s wisdom and guidance as we search for a new couple to join us in the ministry here in Cherokee. We have a couple that has expressed an interest in serving with us and we have met with them a few times in person and by ZOOM. Would you pray for them and for us during this time? Pray for God’s clear direction in all of this. If it is His will that they join the Cherokee team, ask that He open the doors they need to walk through and shut the doors they need to avoid so there is clarity for them and for us.
