From The Hills of Cherokee

Greetings from the Hills of Cherokee!

We wanted to send out a note to let you know what is happening in our lives and ministry during this time.

Ministry

Currently, Scott is doing sermons live each week on Facebook. This has been a new challenge for him because he is not a tech savvy person. Thankfully, our children are more up to speed on these things and have been a great help. One unforeseen blessing of putting the sermons on Facebook is that we have people watching from all over the U.S. We are thankful for family, friends, and many who are familiar with the ministry that take the time to join us live or watch the sermon online at a later time. If you are interested in viewing any of the sermons or joining us on Facebook, you can go to the Facebook page for Grace Community Church of Cherokee and join in. We miss meeting together each week in person with the folks who call Grace Community Church of Cherokee their church home. We pray for them daily and we look forward to the day we are able to meet together again.

We continue to hold Bible study each week via ZOOM which is another new challenge we have faced. As long as the internet is working, we are able to interact with those who are interested in joining us each week. It is not the same as joining together in person, but we are thankful that God has provided this avenue for us to meet together each week.

Due to social distancing concerns and other issues, youth group meetings have been cancelled until further notice.

As many of you know, a large part of our summer typically involves working with teams from many churches around the U.S. Sadly, due to the outbreak of COVID 19 all summer trips were cancelled, that means no summer team interaction for us. Our summer has been much quieter this year and we have had to adjust to not having teams around. The teams are a great help to our ministry as we reach out into the community with the gospel through various ministry opportunities. The teams are also a great help in letting people know about Grace Community Church of Cherokee. We had some various outreach events planned for this summer to invite families to the camp for a cookout and games, but all of that had to be put on hold. Our one consolation is that our God is sovereign, none of this has taken Him by surprise and His plans have not been undone.

Family

Scott and Ruth are doing well and enjoying their new home. One blessing the change in summer schedule has brought, is that we are able to spend time getting settled in our home and experience some of the challenges and benefits of being homeowners. We are thankful that our family has remained healthy and safe during this pandemic. Johnathan has moved into his own apartment and Katie is living in Boone, NC so we are officially empty nesters.

Johnathan and Katie are both looking forward to starting back to class in the fall. Johnathan will finish his classes in December and will be searching for work as an automobile mechanic. He and Autumn will get married in October and start their lives together as husband and wife. Katie has a job in Boone and is planning to live there year-round until she graduates in 2022.

Scott Jr. and his family are doing well in Greenville, SC. Our grandson Briggs is growing and changes so much each time we see him. He will be 1 year old in September and he is already taking steps. Bekah has been able to spend more time at home with him during this time since schools have been closed. Bethany continues to live in Sevierville, Tennessee and works for Foggy Mountain Vet Services in Clyde, NC.

That is just a snapshot of life among the Hills of Cherokee. Thank you in advance for your prayers for our family and our ministry. Here are a few prayer requests:

Prayer Requests:

  • Pray for the families of Grace Community Church of Cherokee, that they would continue to hold fast to their faith in God and grow in their relationship with Him.

  • Pray for those Scott had the opportunity to minister to through the Life Recovery program. There have been many overdoses here since the beginning of this pandemic and several have led to death.

  • Pray for wisdom as Scott seeks to provide leadership for the church plant and those involved.

  • Pray for our continued health and safety of our family.

  • Pray for the leadership of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and our nation.

  • Pray for our finances. Giving has understandably been down. Pray for God to continue to provide for our support account.

Praises:

  • That God has protected our family thus far from COVID 19

  • For the ways we can continue to minister through Facebook and ZOOM.

  • For the individuals who join us each week for the sermon on Facebook, who would not otherwise be able to be a part of worship.

  • For the respite this pandemic has provided for the summer.

  • For God’s continued provision for our lives and ministry.
